On the month of August, SM La Sale had sent a couple of students for the annual KDCA International Student Cultural Exchange Program (Shortened to ISCEP), a unique and innovative exchange program whereby Sabahan students would have to learn a number of traditional dances that is to be performed in South Korea for the Koreans to get a glimpse of the culture in Sabah. We were to arrive at Korea on October 20th and we were scheduled to depart on October 30th.
The students were Redzwan Awang of 4 Vega and myself, Joshua Ralph Kamijan of 4 Rigel. Both of us had to be present at KDCA every Saturday and Sunday to attend practices in order to perfect the dance that we would be performing for the Koreans. So every weekend, our schedules had to be empty to allow for practices and as time went by, all 32 participants from various schools around Sabah had started to bond well with each other along with the 7 teachers; we were like a big family. There were no conflicts or shortcomings whatsoever during practice other than the occasional scolding we’d get if our dance weren’t up to par.
Sooner than we knew it, October 19th came running by and that was when we were scheduled to arrive at KKIA (Kota Kinabalu International Airport) for a tiring but exciting journey. Our flight was due at 12.00 am midnight. After we had boarded the plane for a long 6 hour plane ride, we were all excited yet anxious for what was ahead.
